Among Brooklyn Tech’s vast array of sports teams, it’s no easy feat to stand out in a sea of student athletes. But for Serwaa Forson (‘25), captain of the girls’ varsity basketball team, raw talent made her impossible to miss.
Coach Weiss, the head coach of the girls’ varsity basketball team and a passionate member of the Tech PSAL team, came across Forson in her freshman year JV tryouts, immediately noting that she was “very athletic and possessed skills that were too advanced for a JV team.” So, Serwaa joined the varsity team instead.
While her skills were certainly remarkable, they were still raw. Over the course of her first season, Forson honed her abilities.
“[By the] end of the season, she was one of our top seven to eight players,” said Weiss. Now a senior at Tech, Serwaa has grown into an exceptional athlete with an outstanding record.
For as long as Serwaa can remember, she has been surrounded by basketball. Her dad played professionally for the New York Urban Professional League, and her brother played 78th precinct youth basketball, which inspired a young Serwaa.
“The MVP, he got this big trophy, and I wanted to get the trophy,” Forson recalled.
This motivated her to join the same league as her brother in fourth grade; a league she described as “a little low key.” As she moved on to middle school, her passion for basketball persisted and she decided to join her school team at M.S. 51 where she played for two years before the pandemic shut down school sports. Following her return to the school building, she tried out several other sports like soccer and track, but always came back to basketball.
Since Serwaa’s first season at Tech, she has enjoyed it more and more, forging special bonds with her teammates and achieving an extraordinary amount of personal growth. She has been the team captain for two years now and continues to lead her team all the way to the Brooklyn Borough Championship this year.
“[Forson acts] as an extension of the coaching staff on the court, which is what you want from your leaders,” said Weiss.
Over the past four years, her PSAL record has been outstanding, averaging 15 points per game and scoring more than 25% of all points per game. While continuing to improve and impress her coach and teammates, she keeps grinding. Described by Coach Weiss as “modest, the best player on the team and a top tier player in the city,” he notes that “she knows that no matter what she has to work hard and even if she’s good, she can always be better.”
Her feats on the court display confidence and energy, but, as her coach said, “You wouldn’t notice it just by talking to her because she’s modest and humble.” Her peers at tech such as her best friend Anna Bodzin, or teammate and co-captain Priscilla Louison describe her as an “encouraging” and “confident” person whose “[friendship is valued] both on and off the court.
After high school, Serwaa is majoring in biological sciences at Tufts University, one of her top picks, where she also plans to try out for the basketball team. If that does not work in her favor, she will definitely play on a club team, continuing her no quit career as an exceptional athlete.
