The book The Girl with a Pearl Earring by Chevallier Tracy is an artistic book that was chosen as the summer reading assignment for Tech freshmen. Set in 17th century Delft, Holland, the novel was inspired by Delft school painter Johannes Vermeer’s painting The Girl With A Pearl Earring. This book tells of the “adventures” the girl has in those years.

In spite of its charming story, many people have neglected the book over the years. Students at Tech have said that they read books like The Odyssey, The Jurassic Park, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc. over the summer.

For students who like artistic, or even historical fiction stories, this is the book to read. Students who did read this book over the summer probably wouldn’t have gotten the chance to be exposed to such literature if it hadn’t been for the summer assignment.

Not only does the summer reading assignment keep a person mentally active, but it also gives new insight. The summer assignment acts a good guideline for students who want to prevent themselves from slacking, but it could do with a better book selection. Though the book list for the assignment is optional, it should include books that are more up to date and just as stimulating, like Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Crash of Titans, Immortal: A Novel of the Fallen Angels, and more.
