This generation’s mainstream music is a compilation of auto-tune and bass drops. 5 Seconds of Summer, an Australian pop-rock band, challenges the “modern” music. Luke Hemmings, 18; Calum Hood, 18; Michael Clifford, 18; and Ashton Irwin, 20; collectively 5SOS, bring an edgy sound compared to today’s pop and hip-hop. What truly separates the band from today’s conventional artists is that the members of 5SOS play their own instruments.
The band started in 2011 with humble beginnings. Their first gig was in a dingy pub in Sydney, Australia, to a crowd of twelve people. Hemmings and Clifford were the guitarists, Hood the bassist, and Irwin the drummer.
The first big opportunity for the small-town band came when another well-known group, Hot Chelle Rae, asked the boys to open on their Australian tour. Excited to play for a bigger crowd, 5SOS agreed and the band’s popularity grew exponentially. Since then, they have been on eight headlining tours and two tours supporting boy band, One Direction.
5 Seconds of Summer’s first self-titled album was released on July 22nd, 2014, and quickly took the number one spot on both the iTunes charts and the Billboard 200 album chart. It sold nearly 300 thousand copies in just its first week of release. The twelve songs featured on the record are a clear definition of the band, each having elements of pop, punk, and rock. With influences from their favorite bands, All Time Low, Blink-182 and Good Charlotte, the members of 5SO were able to create the sound they wanted for themselves.
5 Seconds of Summer has been working hard every day for their audience. They have recently released an extended play, “EP,” for Amnesia, a hit single. It has placed number one on music charts for several weeks. Another EP, titled Good Girls, is due to be released on October 10th of this year. This news has been a trending topic on social media and although they have just announced a significant amount of new music, the boys are continuing to write and record more songs for their future albums. Now that’s dedication!
The band has been planning shows for their 2014-2015 headlining tour, “Rock Out With Your Socks Out,” beginning on October 8, 2014 in Mexico. During this tour, 5SOS will be performing for the first time in Asia and other European countries, including Denmark and Norway. The New York concerts of the tour will be held at the Nikon Theater in Jones Beach on September 1st and 2nd of 2015 with tickets for both shows already nearly sold out/
It has been an extremely busy three years for the band. They are constantly away from home to work on music. This year alone, they’ve toured with One Direction, performed on live national television for the Billboard Music Awards and for MTV’s Video Music Awards. They have also been featured on morning shows like The Today Show and Good Morning America. Beyond this, the band has been nominated for, and even won, several awards, including the Teen Choice Awards “Best Break-Out Group.”
This is still only the beginning of 5 Seconds of Summer. The developing musicians are passionate about what they do and just like they are excited for what the future will bring to them, so is the rest of the world.
