Whether NHS is viewed as impactful by the students is completely objective. A member who is inactive in NHS, such as one whose points are in the negatives, or are unsure about what their own committee does to change the school will ultimately believe NHS is not meaningful. Yes, although it is true that NHS has room for improvement, as many organizations do, members have to keep in mind many issues arise from the fact that it is such a large organization as a whole. For 704 members, it is difficult to regularly update the website, especially when it requires collaboration between committee chairs and the secretaries while sometimes needing to give members time to complete their tasks(if virtual). Many of the negative comments about NHS come from members who are unaware of the way NHS operates. While I understand the opinions, NHS does more behind the scenes than it may seem. I’d like to counter Liu’s point as the Induction Committee hosts the annual NHS Installation Ceremony alongside the Induction Ceremony. If members are unable to dedicate time to these events that make up a bulk of their points, it reflects a lack of dedication towards their committee which will have to be compensated for with other events and attending meetings. While members may make comments about NHS being “pointless” it is up to their discretion to decide whether they think their actions are fostering community or just to meet the point threshold. There is no question that people may join NHS for college applications or to build their resume, but nevertheless it is a decision made that creates a positive impact on the school community no matter how one individual perceives it.
