SEREIN, a student-led club and fashion magazine at Brooklyn Tech, has announced its return after a year of hiatus. The club plans to publish an upcoming fall edition, host more club meetings, and expand their social media with a mission to spread fashion awareness and trends among the student body.
Last year, after failing to assign new executives, SEREIN faced difficulties holding monthly club meetings and producing its magazine. Despite these obstacles, the 2024-2025 school year marks a new chapter for SEREIN.
Why did SEREIN disappear last year?
“As far as I know, the former executives […] didn’t really pass on to the [members]…so there was a lack of coordination [and] that’s why the club didn’t happen,” explained SEREIN’s advisor, Mr. Richard Wanliss who teaches freshman DDP.
“No one ended up taking the mantle and so the club just fully fizzled out,” added Betty Ince (‘26), SEREIN’s Co-President and Civil Engineering major.
Even as the club begins anew this year, the challenges it faced before its yearlong suspension persist.
“The hardest thing is to coordinate who will be where, at what time, and to get the publishers and advisers together so that they can make the magazine happen,” Wanliss shared.
For SEREIN’s leadership, it is time to put the past behind them.
“The main job for [the executives] right now is getting [the club] started,” added Ince.
Monthly Club Meetings
Models and photographers are two of SEREIN’s essential positions, working hand-in-hand to put the magazine together. One of SEREIN’s former photographers, Biological Sciences major Kyan McGregor (‘25), explained the collaborative process between models and photographers.
“[During the meetings], I’d sign up for shoots and sign up for the theme and location, and say I’m available on this day at this time,” she said. “Once the models had also signed up we’d meet at the location and take photos of them and tell them how to pose.”
McGregor’s first shoot was at Brooklyn Bridge Park with an accompanying photographer.
Working alongside the photographers, are a team of writers, editors, photo editors, models, and graphic designers.
During monthly meetings, members coordinate with each other to plan shoots and write articles. Selected photos from shoots and published articles can be found in issues of their magazine, which SEREIN publishes on a seasonal basis depending on member productivity.
