Warmth Equation by Infinity Crush

AMarukhnyak ’18 Infinity Crush, stage name for singer, violinist, and pianist Caroline White, recently released her first full length album in three years. Previously associated with acts such as Julia Brown, White was not absent from the music world in the meantime at all. A constant presence in concert and online, her newest release was not unanticipated. Her music is regularly praised by lo-fi and bedroom pop fans, as dreamy, light, and transcendent. With such high pressure for this newest release, White did not disappoint at all.

Warmth Equation begins with “drowning here with all my friends”, a song on her previous album reworked to match the tone of this album. The song turned from almost dreary in its original version to uplifting, maintaining its dreamy tone throughout, with interesting and creative use of sound. White’s production value has greatly increased since Sometimes Even In My Dreams I Am, her previous release. “Drowning here…” makes use of various production techniques that serve as a great introduction to the album. Other tracks are reworked from previous albums as well, including “whisper”.

Newer songs, such as “everything being still” follows the rhythm of a typical Infinity Crush song: soft instrumentals and high vocals with a slow tune. Songs such as this and “wipe down” don’t forget the typical Infinity Crush sound present in previous albums. However, they do get much more musically creative: the instrumentals sound dynamic, and vocals are layered in new ways that are nothing but pleasant to the ears. “Pete and pete” also hints towards musical development: a full band is playing behind White’s vocals, something missing from previous Infinity Crush songs.

A typical response to an album dropped by an artist who has not produced in years is dissonance. Fans can’t relate to or appreciate this new sound, claiming it as “out of style”, a “musical downgrade”, or simply “selling out”. Infinity Crush is none of these. Caroline White, in a music world over-saturated with lo-fi releases that sound so similar, manages to remain distinct, while still growing as an artist in her newest release. Every song is pleasant to listen to both as background noise and in context of other works of White. Warmth Equation, released just three months before the year’s end, still makes my list of top albums of the year, and I infer that her fans feel similarly.
