While Tech is mostly known for our academics, the students here consistently show that we are more than just good test takers. On Saturday, December 3, 2016 our step teams, The Lady Dragons and Organized C.H.A.O.S. (Crazy, Hot, Amazing, Original Steppers) competed at the Youth Step USA Bronx Borough Championship. This was both team’s first competition of the year and they made sure to reassert their dominance on stage.
The Lady Dragons is the all-female step team at Tech. These ladies continuously work hard and are rewarded for their motivation. They have been the subject of two documentaries, have consistently been ranked among the top ten teams, and have received several other accolades. At the Bronx competition they brought home second place, a strong start to this year.
When asked about the competition, Alesia Michel ’17, one of LD’s three captains, said “The competition itself was really short compared to others that we’ve been to. It was nice to see the unique approaches to stepping. I think the team did well, but of course there are ways to improve.”
Diavion Beckford ’17, another captain of LD, said “This past competition was great. We started off strong with positive energy and good vibes between team members. Second place wasn’t so bad, but we’re planning to come up next time.”
Organized C.H.A.O.S is the all-male team at Tech. These gentlemen live by the motto “Go Hard or Go Home. We give you our best and your best is expected in return.” They have proven this over the years, bringing home Regional trophies and placed third in both Nationals they attended last year. At the Bronx competition last Saturday they brought home the first place trophy once again.
David Melo ’17, one of the three OC captains, joined the team in his sophomore year. When asked how he felt the competition went he said “I feel like the Bronx competition went well although there is still much to improve. We have to focus a bit more on getting back into the shape we were in when we got third in both national competitions, but I personally feel like we could definitely win more competitions. This year really seems like it could be a good year for OC.”
The two teams have a long year ahead of them, however if this competition and the past years is anything to go by, they will not fail to make it amazing.
